Contract extension stalled: Will Hürzeler remain St. Pauli coach? Bornemann wants planning security

Second division soccer team FC St. Pauli would like to extend their contract with coach Fabian Hürzeler and the coach himself would also like to stay. But the contract negotiations are stalling. Sports director Andreas Bornemann is now putting pressure on the team publicly.

“The decision about the most important personnel should not be made at the end of the journey, but as early as possible,” said Bornemann in a media round in Mallorca. “So logically we want these in the near future rather than the distant future.”

“At some point all the arguments have been exchanged, then you go around in circles.”

The team around successful coach Hürzeler is practicing under the Balearic sun until Friday to escape the bad weather and space conditions in Hamburg.

However, the Kiezkickers cannot escape the pressing coaching question – and Bornemann seems to be running out of patience. “At some point all the arguments have been exchanged, then you go around in circles.”

Bornemann: “We are struggling for a solution”

Hürzeler recently made a clear commitment to FC St. Pauli and wants to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the season. However, the 30-year-old would also like to have an exit clause in his new, well-paid contract if the Bundesliga comes knocking. This is obviously a red line for St. Pauli.

“There are things that are out of the question for the club, then there are perhaps things that are out of the question for the coach and the advisor. We are struggling to find a solution in these negotiations,” said Bornemann.

The question is: how much longer? The sports director did not issue an ultimatum under the Mallorcan sun. But it’s about when you want to start preparing variants for the leagues in the new season.

Who will be St. Pauli coach next season?

With serious preparation, this should actually have been the case long ago. St. Pauli is on course for promotion to the Bundesliga. Nevertheless, the neighborhood club must of course plan to stay in the 2nd league at the same time and talk to its own players and possible newcomers. If the club then has no answer to the question of who will be the coach next season, that is a very bad starting position.
