Contacted by Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp, Xabi Alonso admits he is happy at Leverkusen

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso feels ‘happy’ at his club at the moment. This statement was made in response to reports that Liverpool contacted him as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp, according to reports.

Klopp announced that he was quickly stepping down from his position as Liverpool coach at the end of the season last month. Alonso quickly became a favorite with the bookies.

The Reds will name Klopp’s replacement in the summer. According to Foot Market (via Mirror). Contact has been made between Liverpool and Alonso as the Premier League side want to know if the Spaniard is interested in the job.

However, the report also states that Alonso is satisfied at Leverkusen and hopes to deliver their first Bundesliga title. In an interview following Klopp’s announcement, Alonso appeared to distance himself from a role on Merseyside.

“I am surprised by Jurgen’s news. I have a lot of respect for Jurgen and Liverpool. At the moment I am very happy here and enjoying my job. Every day and match is a challenge. We are on an intense journey and it is beautiful here, in Leverkusen,” he said .

He said speculation was normal. However, he admitted that he really respected and admired the work that Jurgen had done at Liverpool.

Alonso admits he has a relationship with Reds tea fans. But he is doing a good job, so Leverkusen’s focus is here at Bayer Leverkusen.

“I have great motivation to do a good job here, I’m very happy with the team, with the club, with everything, so that’s my focus. My focus is not on May, but on tomorrow, ahead of the game against Gladbach and helping the players to be ready. But what I will say is it is surprising what happened at Liverpool with Jurgen leaving.”

After playing at Liverpool, Alonso began his managerial career with Real Sociedad B. That stint lasted three years, where he won more than 40 percent of his games before leaving the club in May 2022.

Five months later, Alonso landed his first senior management job at Bayer Leverkusen, taking his side to the semi-finals of the Europa League in his debut season. In May 2023, the Spaniard signed a new three-year contract with the German club and they started the season well.

Most recently, Leverkusen picked up a 3-2 win over Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal, taking their unbeaten streak to 30 matches in all competitions. Alonso’s team continues to progress, after they also made it to the last 16 of the Europa League after winning all their group games.
