Confedepa Voices Disappointment and Threatens Action Against Budget Failures for Asturian Sports

The Confederation of sports federations of Asturias (Confedepa), of which some thirty disciplines are a part, issued a statement yesterday saying “enough” in the face of what it considers a failure to comply with the promises made by Adrián Barbón in relation to the budget that the Principality was going to allocate to the promotion of sport: “We want convey to Asturian society the great disappointment of seeing how, despite the very serious situation that Asturian sport in general and the federations in particular are going through, the head of physical activity and sport in the Principality has failed to comply with the commitments assumed in May with this confederation and, what is more serious, those presented by himself before the General Meeting and included on page 24 of his investiture speech”.

The group of federations, chaired by Lucía Noriega, president of the Asturian Winter Sports Federation, regrets that only 100.000 euros to the base sport game (newly created) and 675.000 which ends up in the federations, especially when The regional president, in his investiture speech on July 18, committed to greater. “In the case of sports federations, it will go from 600,000 to 900,000 euros; in the case of clubs, it will rise from 450,000 to one million and in addition a new line of 200.000 euros to support grassroots sport”, said the regional president in his speech. Of these three figures, Confedepa denounces, the only one that has been reflected in the regional budget is the one allocated to the clubs.

Confedepa in turn criticizes that the money allocated to sports in the region has been decreasing over the years: “The amount for the federations was 800,000 euros in 2005 and since then the CPI in Asturias has increased by 40.4%”. They also compare the contribution that the Principality makes to sport with that of other regions: “Only 0.05% of the total budget continues to be allocated to the promotion of sport, very far from the almost 0.3% of Cantabria, 0.25 % of Navarra or 0.18% of La Rioja, all of them single-provincial communities like ours”.

According to Confedepa, In Asturias there are 100,914 federated athletes, which represents 10% of its population, who only have the support of the federations and their families to “assume many expenses”, especially when they have to go out to compete outside the region. “In Asturias, just over 3 euros per inhabitant continue to be dedicated to the promotion of sport, compared to 15 and 18 in Cantabria and Navarra, and 11 in La Rioja,” they add in their statement.

For all this, they threaten that “sooner rather than later” they will be forced to make a “symbolic handover of the keys to the Presidency of the Principality.” “Faced with the contempt of our Government, we can only regret it, but since we do not want to nor can we be participants or collaborators in these outrages, we publicly express our frontal opposition to them,” they add. Lucía Noriega, for her part, emphasizes that “the situation of Asturian athletes is very bad” and considers that the problem is not with those responsible for regional sports but with money: “It is a budgetary problem, not a management problem.”
