Climbing and the danger of lightness

To the viewer, it looks easy when a climber holds on to a narrow handhold on an inclined wall, reaches for the next one, the next one, and climbs further and further up, placing each step safely. Don’t make a mistake, don’t fall. What few people think about: He carries his body weight upwards.

Last year, the best competition climber Janja Garnbret spoke of a “new generation of skeletons” to point out an omnipresent issue in climbing: low weight and the health consequences. A topic that is always there in climbing – it has never been discussed so openly in the scene before. This is due to well-known climbers and two doctors. You could say: The scene is trying to help itself – and is putting pressure on the association.
