Choisy-le-Roi salutes Idir “Chérif” Negrouche, boxing star in the 1950s and worker at Renault

He alone symbolized an entire era. The one where the Renault factory in Choisy-le-Roi supported hundreds of families. The one where the courageous young men of Kabylie “felt well welcomed by France”. The one where meeting up at the boxing gym to work on your technique and meet up with friends was the only distraction in a hard working life. These are all these images of a courageous, persevering and modest man that came to the minds of the many inhabitants of Choisy affected by the death of Idir Negrouche.

Nicknamed “Chérif”, the boxing champion of the 1950s from the legendary Choisy Boxing Club died at the age of 87, we learned on Sunday February 4. Boxers from several generations have just gathered to pay him a final tribute, before his body leaves to join that of his wife, buried in Algeria since 2010.
