Liverpool FC have to buy their victory dearly, but there is still good news for the Premier League leaders in the evening: defending champions Manchester City are losing important points at home.

League leaders FC Liverpool presented in the English Premier League and successfully defended their top spot. German team manager Jürgen Klopp’s team won 4-1 (1-0) at FC Brentford and consolidated their top spot. Champions Manchester City lost points in the evening with a 1-1 (0-1) draw in the top game against Chelsea FC and gave away their advantage from playing one game less.

Coach Pep Guardiola’s Skyblues fell back to third place due to the draw. Chelsea took the lead after a counterattack by former City player Raheem Sterling (42′), Rodri (83′) scored the well-deserved equaliser. Despite the pressing superiority, City could no longer turn the game around. With 53 points, the defending champion is behind Liverpool (57) and Arsenal FC (55) and can only regain second place with a win in the catch-up game against Brentford on Tuesday (8.30 p.m./Sky). The Skyblues failed primarily due to their unusual weakness in finishing. Superstar Erling Haaland also missed several opportunities.

“It doesn’t look particularly good for anyone”

Striker Darwin Nunez (35th) with a remarkable lift, Alexis Mac Allister (55th) and the jokers Mohamed Salah (68th) and Cody Gakpo (86th) scored the goals for Liverpool. In the meantime, Ivan Toney shortened the score for the hosts (75th). But the Reds had to pay dearly for the victory: “We have mixed feelings. We lost some players for whom we don’t know how serious it is,” said Klopp. “It’s not looking particularly good for anyone.” Diogo Jota, goalscorer Núñez and Curtis Jones had to be replaced, and Jota was even taken off the pitch on a stretcher. The extent of the injuries was initially unclear on Saturday. Bitter for the leaders, who were already missing two top performers in Trent Alexander-Arnold and goalkeeper Alisson.

Arsenal set the next exclamation mark in the away game at Burnley FC. A week after the show of force against West Ham United (6-0), the Gunners defeated Burnley 5-0 (2-0). German international Kai Havertz played from the start and showed a strong performance. He set up Leandro Trossard to make it 4-0 (66′), before Havertz himself scored the final point (78′). The other goals were scored by Martin Ödegaard (4th) and double packer Bukayo Saka (41st, penalty kick, 47th).
