Charges Filed in Fatal Shooting at Sporting Event

Both adults were charged with second-degree murder. They have since been hospitalized, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said during a press conference.

The new charges were filed after two juveniles were detained last week for illegal possession of a firearm and resisting arrest. Authorities said other charges could also be filed.

Police said a dispute between several people led to the shooting, which occurred despite the presence of 800 police officers to ensure security at the event.

The 22 injured range in age from eight to 47, according to Kansas City Police Department Chief Stacey Graves. Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a mother of two and host of the radio show ‘Taste of Tejano’ has died.

This shooting is the most recent to occur during sporting events in the United States. Several people were injured in a shooting during the Nuggets’ NBA championship parade last year in Denver.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said the way a sports team celebrates a championship may need to be revisited, even though he pledged last week that the city would continue to celebrate victories. Moreover, the St. Patrick’s Day parade, which will take place next month, will indeed take place, Lucas assured.
