Center Training with Olympic Bronze Medalist Shamil Borchashvili Leaves Judo Athletes Inspired

On Sunday, February 25th, the second center training of the Carinthian Judo Regional Association took place in the Feldkirchen sports hall. 54 athletes from Carinthian clubs took part in this training. 16 athletes from our club were also represented. The training was led by national team athletes and one of the most successful judo athletes in the Austrian Judo Association, Shamil Borchashvili.

Shamil Borchashvili won the bronze medal at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo and also took third place at the 2022 World Championships in Tashkent. Last year he won the home Grandslam in Linz. With a total of 6 Grand Prix or Grand Slam medals, Shamil is certainly one of the top athletes in the world. He is currently ranked 9th in the world in his weight class. His biggest competitor for Olympic qualification for Paris 2024 is his younger brother, Wachid.

In the morning Shamil showed us his turning technique from the prone position to a hold and in the afternoon he showed us his secret to his special technique, Sumi-gaeshi. After the lunch break, there was a question and answer session where our young judo athletes were able to discuss many questions with Shamil. Shamil told us what the difference is between motivation and discipline. He explained:

“In the beginning you have the motivation and when this decreases it is important to have the discipline and continue the training!”

He also said that it is not always important to make the decision to become world champion at the U16/U18 youth level. He himself only started professional sports during his basic military service in the Austrian Army and won the Olympic medal three years later.

Our meeting judo athletes were enthusiastic about the training and are already looking forward to the next center training on April 7th, 2024, where Austria’s youth coordinator, Michael Winkler, will honor us with his talent tour in Carinthia.
