Carlo Ancelotti is known for moving his players to different positions on the pitch.
“This is how it begins,” smiles Eduardo Camavinga at Aurélien Tchouameni, as they discuss the latter’s recent assignment in central defense. Following Tuesday’s 1-0 win over RB Leipzig, footage was filmed of the duo discussing their position change with their opponent and compatriot Mohamed Simakan.
Camavinga is well placed to know this. Last season, he sometimes played left-back, following Didier Deschamps’ decision to use him in that position in Blue during the 2022 World Cup. He performed so well there that he has become one of Ancelotti’s preferred options for 2023. Following Ferland Mendy’s fitness issues, he started one of the most crucial matches of Real Madrid’s season against Manchester City in the semi-final of the Champions League.
With David Alaba out until the end of the season, Eder Militao still having at least a month to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and Antonio Rudiger also injured, Tchouaméni was relegated to defense. His strong performance threatens to make him a viable option, regardless of Camavinga’s jokes. In the five matches played by the former Monegasque in defense this season, the Whites have still not conceded a goal.
