Canadian Judoka Christa Deguchi Claims Gold Medal in Baku Grand Slam

Canadian Christa Deguchi adds a gold medal to her collection.

The judoka climbed to the top of the podium on Friday in the under 57 kg category at the grand slam in Baku, Azerbaijan.

In the finale, Deguchi a battu par ippon la Kosovare Nora Gjakova.

During the last grand slam, in Paris, the Canadian won silver.

This is a ninth grand slam gold medal for the 28-year-old judoka, who is also the reigning world champion in her category.

Christa Deguchi is 1st in the general ranking in the under 57 kg category with 8195 points, ahead of her compatriot and opponent, the Ontarian Jessica Klimkait (7600 points). The latter does not participate in the tournament in Baku.

The two Canadians will, however, meet again at the next grand slam, which will take place at the end of March in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Klimkait and Deguchi have been engaged in a heated battle for several years. Moreover, three of the last four world titles have been won by one of the two Canadians (Deguchi in 2023 and 2019, Klimkait in 2021).
