Can the Lakers Make a Championship Run in 2024?

17 NBA titles, no club has more. 32 finals appearances – ten more than any other team in history. At least one Hall of Famer on the roster in every year of its existence. So it’s actually logical, even self-evident, that the league’s most glamorous franchise is constantly on the hunt for titles. Also in this year?

A comment from Seb Dumitru

The last championship to date was almost four years ago. In 2020, “Purple & Gold” won the infamous “Bubble Championship”. Not everyone is taking the title from the shortened and mutilated Covid season seriously. Before that, the last time there were back-to-back championships was in 2009 and 2010.

Just one championship in five years since LeBron James moved to Los Angeles in the summer of 2018. Actually too little. (Lakers at Suns: Sunday, February 25th, 9 p.m. live on ProSieben MAXX, Joyn, ran.de and in the ran app)

And for a long time in year six it didn’t look as if ring number five would jump out for the “Chosen One”.

The Lakers disappointed with a 19-21 start, losing ten out of 13 games in December, right after winning the first ever “In-Season Tournament”. The offensive was a disaster. Darvin Ham’s rotations as well.

New life was breathed into the Lakers

A lot has happened since then. Coach Ham recognized – better late than never – who his five best players were (James, Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura) and adjusted both the starting five and team rotation accordingly. Since the five most talented basketball players have been working together more often, the attack has finally arrived in 2024. A 122 offensive rating and nine wins from eleven games speak volumes.

the essentials in brief

The updated Lakers have won a total of twelve of the last 18 games – including in Boston, New York and Golden State as well as against Oklahoma City, Dallas and New Orleans. That has breathed new life into hopes of unexpected playoff greatness.

The ball runs much faster and more fluidly through your own ranks. Three players (James, Russell and Reaves) distribute more than five assists per game. Even the three-pointers are getting better now – small but equally important steps for what has long been the worst shooting team in the NBA (30th in attempts, 27th in success rate).

Does this team have enough quality?

Of course, the lack of shooters and the suboptimal weighting of productivity within our own ranks remain worrying.

But as long as the superstar duo James/Davis stays healthy, the Lakers are feared opponents that no one wants to run into in the playoffs.

The silent trade deadline doesn’t change that, with LA surprisingly keeping its gunpowder completely dry – perhaps hunting for a third star again next summer with up to three first-round picks.

Until then, buyout veteran and newcomer Spencer Dinwiddie gives his new employer more options as a playmaker and dribbler who can get into seams. Cam Reddish and Gabe Vincent should be able to play again soon, and Jarred Vanderbilt may also return before the playoffs. Until then, Ham & Co. have time to figure out the perfect rotation.

The Lakers seem ready for the final spurt

The current team has already shown in recent years that it has what it takes to survive must-win games and several playoff rounds.

Length, dominance in the zone, countless free throw attempts, as well as a suffocating defense – all folded around the brilliance of James and Davis: These are still convincing arguments for a possible push in April and May.

This is how the Lakers became champions in 2020, how they reached the Conference Finals in 2023, and how they also won the NBA Cup in December.

February was strong, the trend is clearly pointing in the right direction. If the Lakers find the perfect mix of offense and defense in the remaining 24 games, the competition in the West can warm up.

Ten of the next 13 Lakers games will take place at home. There, LeBron and Co. are 20-9, one of the best home records in the West.

So you shouldn’t be blinded by the current ninth place in the conference and a lot of bad press. The Lakers are a force to be reckoned with!
