Bundesliga: Mainz 05 dismisses coach Jan Siewert

FSV Mainz 05 has reacted to the ongoing negative series in the Bundesliga by separating from coach Jan Siewert. The penultimate team in the table, which has not won in eleven games, released the 41-year-old on Monday. Siewert was only in office for three months. The club announced that his successor should be presented this Monday.

“Unfortunately, we now see the change in the coaching position as a necessary step in order to be able to bring about a positive turnaround,” said Mainz sports director Christian Heidel. On Saturday Mainz plays against FC Augsburg.

Siewert was only hired as interim coach at the beginning of November after his predecessor Bo Svensson resigned. In December, his contract was extended until June 30, 2026. Apart from his first game against RB Leipzig, the former coach of Mainz’s second team did not win a game and drew six times.

Analysis after the defeat against Stuttgart

After the 3-1 defeat at VfB Stuttgart, FSV sports director Martin Schmidt avoided making a commitment to Siewert and announced a detailed analysis. “We will sit down together calmly and see what the next steps are. We have to change something, that’s clear,” said Schmidt. “It’s clear that we obviously can’t continue playing like this. We need victories.”

The Mainz team is threatened with their first relegation from the Bundesliga since promotion in 2009. They are already nine points behind the first non-relegation place. There is a four point gap to the relegation place.
