Bundesliga: Bo Henriksen becomes the new coach of FSV Mainz 05

The Dane Bo Henriksen will be the new coach of the Bundesliga soccer club FSV Mainz 05. The 49-year-old comes from FC Zurich and signed a contract until 2026, as the club announced. After eleven games without a win, the Rhinelanders announced at the beginning of the week that they would be parting ways with their previous coach Jan Siewert. The 41-year-old was only in office for around three months. Mainz are in 17th place in the table.

“We have looked intensively at our current situation and analyzed which type of coach with which footballing approach suits us in this difficult sporting situation,” said sports director Christian Heidel. They chose Bo because he had repeatedly succeeded in forming teams under very different conditions. “In addition, Bo Henriksen is a very emotional, open and opinionated character who radiates incredibly positive energy and will fit in very well with Mainz 05.”

Mainz is threatened with relegation for the first time in 15 years

Henriksen started his coaching career at the Danish club Brønshøj BK, with whom he was promoted to the second Danish league in 2010. He then coached AC Horsens from 2014 to 2020 and became Danish runner-up and cup winner with FC Midtjylland in the 2021/2022 season. Henriksen most recently moved to FC Zurich in October 2022. Last week he announced that he did not want to extend his contract with the Swiss, which expires at the end of the season.

The Mainz team is threatened with their first relegation from the Bundesliga since promotion in 2009. They are already nine points behind the first non-relegation place. There is a four point gap to the relegation place. Next Saturday Mainz will play against FC Augsburg, who are currently in eleventh place in the table.
