FSV Mainz 05 – 1. FC Union Berlin 1:1 (1:1)

FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC Union Berlin have missed a break in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga. In the catch-up game, both clubs split 1-1 (1-1). Mainz remains in 17th place in the table. Union Berlin is in 15th place with six points more.

In front of 26,200 spectators, Mainz took the lead thanks to Jonathan Burkardt’s 1-0 win (45th/+8th minutes). Later in stoppage time, Robin Gosens (45th/+13th) scored the equalizer for Union Berlin. The fact that there was such a long injury time in the first half of the game was due to renewed fan protests. Tennis balls were thrown onto the lawn from the Union supporters’ block to protest against the investor entry sought by the German Football League.

The hosts were more dominant in the second half, but were unable to capitalize on the few chances they had on the rain-soaked pitch. The Berliners, coached by assistant coach Danijel Jumić, also had no further compelling chances. Union head coach Nenad Bjelica had to watch in the stands again after he was suspended for his assault on national player Leroy Sané at the game in Munich.
