Joy Beune had an excellent general for the World Championship distances in Calgary on Sunday. The Dutch champion convincingly won the 1,500 meters at the World Cup competition in Quebec.
Beune drove a time of 1.55.50 in the Center de Glaces, equaling Ivanie Blondin’s track record. She was no less than nine-tenths faster than Chinese number two Mei Han (1.56.39). Melissa Wijfje surprisingly finished third in 1.56.89.
For example, 24-year-old Beune wins an international competition in the 1,500 meters for the first time. The Team IKO skater has been in great shape in recent weeks. Two weeks ago she won the 3,000 meters in Salt Lake City, her first international success.
Reigning Olympic champion Miho Takagi and world champion Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong were missing from the World Cup in Quebec. The two prefer to train in preparation for the World Championship distances, which will be held in two weeks in Calgary, Canada.
Behind Beune and Wijfje, Groenewoud disappointed with a fifth fastest time (1.57.27). As a result, she lost her third place in the World Cup standings to Beune. Esther Kiel finished far outside the top ten. Kiel finished sixteenth in a time of 1.59.36.
