Bayer Leverkusen played a brilliant game against FC Bayern Munich. Xabi Alonso’s team temporarily humiliated the record champions in the top game of the Bundesliga. The Spaniard takes a step back in the moment of success and proves to be a true team player.

Jeremi Frimpong was completely unstoppable. After his goal, the Leverkusen player stormed across half the pitch and didn’t allow himself to be caught by his cheering teammates. He first stopped at the substitution bench and rolled across the floor in joy at the clear 3-0 win against FC Bayern, which he had sealed with his goal in the final minute. Everyone rushed euphorically to celebrate with the Dutchman. All except one: Xabi Alonso. The Bayer Leverkusen coach stood a meter away and enjoyed the victory in the top game of the Bundesliga.

It was a well-deserved success. Leverkusen was clearly the better team and showed a very strong performance not only in terms of play but also in terms of tactics. Bayer’s defense hardly allowed anything to happen. Bayern only fired one shot at the Leverkusen goal. Top striker Harry Kane only had 20 touches of the ball and his only shot on goal was blocked by a defender. “We were on the accelerator from the first to the last minute. We did really good things with the ball. “This is a very, very deserved victory,” said Leverkusen midfielder Robert Andrich.

Of course Alonso was also happy. “The victory is deserved. We wanted to work a lot against the ball and we did a great job defensively. We gave up almost no chances. The first goal was very important,” said the Bayer coach.

“I alone can’t do anything here”

As calmly as the Spaniard watched the celebrations after the third goal, he was just as emotional after the game. When the Bayer players lined up in front of the fan curve to celebrate with the supporters, Alonso also joined them.

But not alone. The 42-year-old called the entire coaching team onto the pitch to celebrate with the team and fans. “The players need all of us. I can’t do anything here alone. I have a top team around me. That is the key to success,” said Alonso. Alonso was asked whether he believed that Leverkusen would become German champions. His answer: “We’re talking in May. Starting tomorrow I’ll think about Heidenheim.”
