Barça Considering Moving to Palau Sant Jordi for Specific Matches: A Strategic Move for Revenue and Member Loyalty

These days Barça is studying moving to the Palau Sant Jordi in very specific matches with two clear objectives. The first, given the club’s financial needs, is to increase box office revenue now that, in addition to being among the best clubs in Europe, it has just incorporated a basketball phenomenon like Ricky Rubio. The second is to see to what extent, and with a view to the new Palau Blaugrana, which does not yet have a date (2028 is planned, but this remains to be seen), build loyalty and create a pre-registration list of members who now do not fit in the Palau .

Within the detailed study that Barça is carrying out to activate or not the Sant Jordi plan with the help of the Barcelona City Council, the club has sent a survey to its members in which, in addition to asking about their status as a subscriber or not to the Palau, asks two very specific questions. The first is: “under similar price conditions, would you be willing to go to the Palau Sant Jordi for important matches?” And the second: “Looking ahead to the future Palau, would you be willing to pre-register to obtain a season ticket?” Asked about the possible transfer, the sports councilor of Barcelona City Council, David Escudé, did not clarify too much at the presentation event of the Volta a Catalunya: “I don’t know what consultation they have made, it is absolutely unknown to me. As the City Council I have little to say, because the manager of the facilities is BSM, with whom Barça works daily at the Estadi Olímpic. They are private conversations. If there ends up being an agreement, it will be welcome for the city and for basketball fans, who will be able to see it in a pavilion much larger than the Palau Blaugrana.”

Many interests converge in Barça’s interest in playing at the Palau Sant Jordi. In addition to the very high demand for tickets from a basketball section that, having lost Mirotic, has recovered Ricky Rubio, there is also the interest of the City Council, responsible for the facility, in organizing the 2025 Final Four. An event that is in danger due to the emergence of Abu Dhabi, which according to various information would be willing to offer 75 million euros to host F4’s first club competition between 2025 and 2027. Barcelona City Council has already announced that if the emirate reaches those figures, Barcelona will withdraw from the bid, since it is not willing to go beyond the figures that are paid today in Europe and which reach a maximum of four million euros. “We don’t enter auctions. Therefore, if an Arab country comes and multiplies the economic issue by I don’t know how much, we are not going to enter into a tender. Barcelona has enough attractiveness and facilities to host any sporting event, including the Euroleague. The conversations are open and there is no decision made,” clarified Escudé, who says he is not aware of any final decision by the competition: “Euroleague has not communicated absolutely anything to me about it, not even informally, and we are talking with them. I know what I have been able to read in the press. If it is true and Abu Dhabi puts up 25 million, Barcelona will not compete, it is beyond all logic. We are interested in events like the Euroleague but we will not go crazy putting offers out of the reach of any city.”
