Baku Judo Grand Slam: Exciting Final Day Results and Spectacular Performances

Third day of the Baku Judo Grand Slam. Another day full of impressive performances from local and international judokas in the Azeri capital. Once again, children filled the National Gymnastics Arena to catch a glimpse of their heroes in one of the flagship events of the IFJ World Judo Tour.

Everyone was waiting for the under 90 kg final, which saw the two legends Murad Fatiyev and Krisztián Tóth face off. Four minutes into the golden score, Fatiyev seized his chance by trapping Tóth at the edge of the area, to the delight of the crowd.

“The crowd supported us a lot, that’s what allowed me to achieve this result. We have already won three gold medals and we believe that in the next final we will have another medal” said Murad Fatiyev.

Guusje Steenhuis and Yuliia Kurchenko also obtained the golden score after a tough battle in the under 78 kg category. With a perfectly timed ko-uchi gari, Guusje Steenhuis swept his opponent aside and sealed the deal.

She received her medal from Vladimír Bárta, IFJ sports director.

“I won a gold medal a while ago so it’s really good for my self-confidence. People really like it when you throw and when you win it’s really nice” s’est enthusiastic Guusje Steenhuis.

In the under 100 kg category, world number one Ilia Sulamanidze wasted no time in securing first place on the podium with a technique that allowed him to get the better of Piotr Kuczera for the ippon.

In the over 78 kg category, Romane Dicko won the title thanks to a tactical victory in the final against the Italian Asya Tavano. The medals were presented by Mohammed Meridja, IFJ Director of Education and Training.

In the over 100 kg category, Valeriy Endovitskiy finished the match in style by fabulously throwing Dzhamal Gamzatkhanov for an incredible ippon. The medals were presented by Ki-Young Jeon, IJF Director of Chief Referees.

Once again, Azeri judokas offered their audience a breathtaking show! This new edition of the Baku Grand Slam is now over.
