A Champions League clash that didn’t have a winner, but deserved one. PSV and Dortmund charmed with all-or-nothing football, but ironically it didn’t work out for either of the two teams. Ex-PSV player Donyell Malen initially upset his former team, but PSV fought back and received a questionable penalty: 1-1. “That is never a mistake,” he said afterwards in disbelief.

A match that was never boring for a minute.

Borussia Dortmunden PSV are simply teams that play football more with their hearts than with their heads.

And as expected – and even announced by both teams -, they made it an open battle in their Champions League clash. The pace was high, the duels were tough and the chances fell on both sides.

But although the home team in Eindhoven had a slight advantage in the flashy initial phase, it was the visitors who silenced the cheerful Philips Stadium for the first time.

Donyell Malen, of all people – a man with a PSV division – scored the opening goal through the intersection.

Malen did not dare to celebrate his goal at all.

Malen apologized, but his ex-teammates showed less mercy.

PSV is untouchable in Dutch competitive football and with that thought simply continued to play football without any complexities. A searching Johan Bakayoko also seemed to be finding his feet more and more after the break.

Yet it was not the busy Belgian, but a questionable penalty phase that brought PSV back to life.

The experienced Mats Hummels first tackled the ball, but then also lightly tackled his opponent Tillman in the large rectangle. The referee ruled that this intervention was enough for an eleven meter. A piece of cake for the inevitable Luuk de Jong: 1-1.

I don’t understand the referees anymore.

    Mats Hummels

“That is never a mistake,” Hummels could not be calmed down after the match.

“Tillman and Bakayoko laughed themselves to death for minutes about that decision. I play the ball 100%. This is football, right? Sorry. We also conceded such a ridiculous penalty against PSG. I don’t understand the referees anymore.”

That peculiar phase would completely overshadow the end of the party. After a war of attrition, the clash quietly ended in a draw. However, this match deserved a more dignified ending.

A German former top referee expressed his displeasure to X: “A farce”

    Phase by phase

    END: 1-1

A Champions League clash that didn’t have a winner, but deserved one. PSV and Dortmund charmed with all-or-nothing football, but ironically it didn’t work out for either of the two teams. Ex-PSV player Donyell Malen initially upset his former team, but PSV fought back and was awarded a questionable penalty. The physical war of attrition ended with a division of points.

    6 – extra time

An extra 6 minutes will be added.

The many substitutions completely take the pace out of the match. Dortmund in particular, which has made some defensive interventions, seems to be content with a draw. Can PSV still break the ceasefire?

There’s Dest again. PSV’s busy full-back dribbles past the slipping Reyerson and tries to outwit Meyer with a punt, but the Dortmund goalkeeper ruthlessly blocks the trick ball away.

    Retro Bakayoko

It has not yet been the Belgian’s match, who was busy, but lacked some sharpness today. Yet he can cut inside again and hold his own – with his signature move – into the wind, but his shot is too weak and rolls into Meyer’s arms. Bakayoko finds it difficult to hide his disappointment.

Both teams seem to get lost in the moment. There is still a lot of conflict between the lines, but sloppiness with the ball is now taking over. There have been no real chances in the last 10 minutes.

PSV now dictates the law and monopolizes the leather. Dortmund seems a bit shaken after that questionable penalty. Can Bakayoko and co. still benefit?

    Warning shot Saibari

PSV has smelled blood and – spurred on by its frenzied fans – is pushing hard after the equalizer. Saibari thus spins freely again at the edge of the large rectangle. The PSV attacker delivers another scorching blow, but this time he sends the ball high into the stands.
