Azerbaijani Judo Heroes Shine at Baku Grand Slam

On the third day of the Baku Grand Slam, the Azerbaijani capital once again offered judo at its best.

Many children were on hand at the National Gymnastics Arena to celebrate their heroes.

“The audience supported us very much”

In the final in the under 90kg weight class, local hero Murad FATIYEV competed against Hungary’s Krisztian TOTH.

After almost four minutes, Fatiyev took his chance, won with the Golden Score and was thrilled by the spectators in Baku:

“The audience supported us a lot, maybe that’s why I won. We already have three gold medals and we believe we will win another medal in the next final.

Farid GAYIBOV, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports, was pleased with Fatiyev’s success and presented the medals.

In the under 78 kilo final, Guusje STEENHUIS swept her opponent Yuliia KURCHENKO off her feet with a perfectly timed Kouchi Gari in the first exchange, sealing her victory.

The Dutchwoman received her medal from Vladimir BARTA, the IJF Head Sport Director.

Guusje STEENHUIS is now 31 years old and was very happy about her success:

“It’s been a while since my last gold medal, so it’s good for my confidence to show everyone that I can take one home too. People really like it when you throw and when you win, that’s really nice .

In the under 100kg class, world number one Ilia SULAMANIDZE wasted no time in securing the top spot on the podium by defeating Piotr KUCZERA with an ippon.

Romane Dicko celebrates gold

At over 78kg, Frenchwoman Romane DICKO won the title with a tactical victory in the final against Italian Asya TAVANO.

At over 100 kilos, Valeriy ENDOVITSKIY won in style, defeating Dzhamal GAMZATKHANOV of Azerbaijan via ippon!

The winners were honored by Ki-Young JEON, the IJF Head Referee Director.

Once again the Azerbaijani judoka put on a great show for their enthusiastic audience! They showed their passion and commitment to the sport of judo.
