Austria’s teams out in Busan

Austria’s national table tennis teams were eliminated from the World Team Championships in Busan, South Korea, on Wednesday. After finishing third in the group, the women lost 2-3 to Thailand in the second round, while the men lost 3-0 in the round of 16 after a 3-2 win against Hong Kong Japan. The Olympic qualification for women is gone, as is the chance for men.

Because fixed tickets for the games are only available for the World Cup quarter-finalists. The continental champions had already qualified before that. If some of them – like Germany – make it to the World Cup quarter-finals, in addition to a fixed additional place, further free tickets will be allocated via the team world rankings. The ÖTTV men are currently 32nd, the worst of all the round of 16.

Andreas Levenko, Robert Gardos and Daniel Habesohn fought hard against elimination. Successful against the team from Hong Kong, even though they were favored as eleventh in the world rankings. Each of the three ÖTTV players contributed one point to the success. Just three and a half hours later it was against the Japanese, who had escaped the second round as group winners. Levenko and Gardos in particular held up strongly again, but had to accept 1:3 defeats. Habesohn lost his game 0:3.

Two Polcanova victories are not enough

Only Sofia Polcanova scored for the ÖTTV women, twice with a 3-0 win. Karoline Mischek lost her match 2:3, Liu Jia, who was ill, lost 1:3 against Froschberg player Suthasini Sawettabut and in the decision against Orawan Paranang 0:3. This means that Liu Jia’s seventh Olympic participation will not happen. For the 42-year-old, qualifying for the Olympic singles is no longer an issue. Polcanova, on the other hand, can still hope for this and also expects to be able to do well in the mixed doubles alongside Gardos.
