Australian Women’s Doubles pair and number one seeds, Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu sit in the box seat heading into the VICTOR Oceania Championships 2024. With a current World Ranking of 37, this pair, who are growing in confidence with each tournament they play, are focused on staying in the top 50 worldwide when the BWF qualification period for the Paris Olympic Games ends on 28 April 2024.
With a maximum of one pair able to represent Australia at the Olympic Games, hot on the heals of Mapasa and Yu are another Australian pair who sit just outside the top 50 with a current World Ranking of 63. Seasoned campaigner Gronya Sommerville and fellow Australian Falcon, Kaitlyn Ea will be using their position as number two seeds to progress through the draw to what could become the final of the tournament. With so much on the line, taking a win at next week’s tournament will only increase their chances.
Other players to watch will be the Tjonadi sisters from New South Wales who claim the fourth seed position. After reaching the quarterfinals at the Sydney International 2023, they will be looking to continue their momentum next week.
Entering this event and being seeded at number three are the New Zealand established pair of Anona Pak and Erena Calder-Hawkins. With not a lot of competition under their belts in recent times, they will be calling on their experience to get through to the pointy end of the draw. Featuring in the top half of the draw, they will need to have all their stars aligning if they wish to knock Mapasa and Yu off the number one spot.
