The home team beat Uzbekistan 3-2 on penalties, after the result was 1-1 in the 120th minute, the result of an own goal by Uzbek goalkeeper Yusupov in the first half and Hamrobekov’s goal in the second half. In the spot kicks, the protagonist was goalkeeper Barsham, who saved three penalties, allowing teammate Pedro Miguel to score the decisive one, to the jubilation of 60,000 fans in the Al-Bayt stadium, north of Doha.
The goal that decided Iran’s victory over Japan in the other quarter-final also came from a penalty in injury time. Alireza Jahanbakhsh did not miss the opportunity to complete the comeback for the Iranians, who had gone behind in the first half thanks to a goal from Hidemasa Morita but then equalized in the second half thanks to Mohammad Mohebi, assisted by Roma player Azmoun.
