Sergio Goycochea, goalkeeper for the Argentine national team at the 1990 World Cup, joined the large community of mourners after the sudden death of his former opponent Andreas Brehme. In a video that the FIFA Museum shared on its Instagram channel, the 60-year-old condoled with the family of Brehme, who died on Tuesday night.

Goycochea praised Brehme as a “great hero of the World Cup” and talked again about the decisive penalty that made Brehme immortal. “Fate pitted us against each other in the final of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. What a moment, in the most important competition of all, in a crucial situation, because that penalty gave Germany the title,” said Goycochea full of pathos. “The wonderful universe of football, this wonderful sport, has lost one of its great heroes,” added the 1990 World Cup runner-up: “Rest in peace, Andreas!”

In his own Instagram story, Goycochea shared a photo of the legendary penalty kick, in which the former penalty killer reached in vain for the ball, and another picture that shows Brehme with the Argentine idol Diego Maradona, who died in 2020.

In the final at the Stadio Olimpico, however, when there was a penalty five minutes before the end when the score was 0-0, Brehme faced Goycochea. With his penalty saves he had already brought his team a round further in the quarter-finals against Yugoslavia and in the semi-finals against Italy. Brehme took a short run, shot flat with his right and placed it in the left corner, Goycochea, the penalty specialist, stretched in vain – 1-0 for Germany.
