AMLO analyzes CPKC proposal for passenger train between CDMX-EU – El Sol de México

The Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railway company proposed to AMLO to develop a passenger train that links the Mexican capital with the border with the United States and will present a study on the initiative in May, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said this Thursday.

The proposal occurs in the midst of an attempt by the López Obrador government to recover the missing passenger trains in the country, since the infrastructure is used almost exclusively for the transportation of goods, controlled mainly by CPKC and Grupo México.

So far, the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SICT) has received five proposals from companies interested in participating in the promotion of passenger trains, in response to a decree promulgated in January to promote this service.

CPKC “already made a proposal for a train to Querétaro, Mexico-Querétaro, and with the possibility of expanding it to Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo; the entire line,” said the president in his daily press conference.

For its part, Grupo México’s railway unit later reported that it had also presented a proposal to offer passenger train service in the country and that it was currently analyzing various technical aspects together with the authorities.

In mid-December, the Government reported that it had reached an agreement with the local CPKC unit to develop a project for the construction of a suburban passenger train in Monterrey, according to an agreement disclosed in the Official Gazette.

When the decree to boost passenger rail service was published, López Obrador stated that if the companies invited to participate, those that now operate freight trains, decided not to offer the new service, the Government or other companies would do so.
