Amazon Pays Staggering Amount for Exclusive NFL Playoff Game on Prime Video

In order to secure exclusive rights to an NFL playoff game next season, Amazon reportedly paid even more than NBCUniversal did for Peacock’s game this past season.

Last May, the NFL announced that one playoff game for the 2023-24 season would be streamed exclusively on Peacock. NBC paid $110 million for the game.

While that gained relatively little attention at the time, fans — and even some members of the media — were outraged when it was revealed that game would be between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins. Due to the storylines going into it, it was one of the most anticipated games of that weekend.

That outrage didn’t seem to affect ratings, however. Days later, NBC sports announced it was the most-streamed live event in U.S. history with 23 million viewers.

When the success of the game became evident, Amazon swooped in to secure its own playoff game on Prime Video next season. Front Office Sports reported early Wednesday that Amazon paid $120 million, but CNBC reporter Alex Sherman heard the price was much higher.

“I’m told the number’s actually closer to $150 million rather than $120 million, from a source familiar with the matter,” Sherman said to Brian Sullivan on Last Call.

“Why is this important?” he said. “To the league, it’s like, ‘Eh, $30 million. Who cares?’ But the point of why is this

important is that Peacock paid $110 million for the last wildcard game. So, if Amazon’s paying closer to $150 million for this one, now we’re talking about a 30-plus percent increase, not a nine-or-ten percent increase. So, this is what the league uses.”
