Allen Iverson Talks Scoring, All-Time Starting Five, and Luka Doncic on “Big Podcast with Shaq”

In the “Big Podcast with Shaq,” NBA legend Allen Iverson once again wore his heart on his sleeve, talking about, among other things, how many points he would average today and what he likes so much about Luka Doncic.

Former Philadelphia 76ers star Allen Iverson is known for not mincing his words. A few days ago he was a guest on the “Big Podcast” with Shaquille O’Neal and made some sensational statements.

For example, he claimed that if he had played in today’s NBA, he would have been able to score significantly more points than all the stars that year.

Allen Iverson: Kobe, MJ, Lebron…and? This is my all-time starting five

The NBA is so loved for discussions like this. A popular question: What is the best player of all time at each position? Feel free to write us your opinion in the comments.

The phrase “All-Time Starting Five” of course leaves room for interpretation, whether it means the best five players of all time, the best players at the respective position or the potentially best-functioning quintet.

Allen Iverson, MVP of 2001, has a clear starting lineup in mind, as he said on the “Big Podcast.”

  • Point Guard: Stephen Curry
  • Shooting Guard: Kobe Bryant
  • Small Forward: Michael Jordan
  • Power Forward: LeBron James
  • Center: Shaquille O’Neal

Apparently, “AI” chose not to choose the players himself. He joked: “If I had to replace someone in my place, it would be Shaq.” The former big men sat directly across from him during the conversation.

Allen Iverson: “Nowadays I would score 43 points a game”

Later in the interview, Iverson was asked how many points he would score per game in today’s NBA. In his career, the guard was overall four-time scoring champion, put up more points than anyone else during these years. He had his highest average in the 2005/06 season with exactly 33 points per game.

“I lost the scoring title for a season because Kobe Bryant averaged 35 points. I think if I could score 33 points in that era, I would be up to 43 points in today’s basketball. I know that I would be better off with those extra ten points,” Iverson is certain.

In fact, the statistics show that significantly more points are being scored these days than in Iverson’s time. In the current season, teams are averaging 115.5 points per game. In the 2005/06 season there were only 97.

Joel Embiid, also of the Philadelphia 76ers, leads the points per game list this season with 35.3. Michael Jordan (1986/87) has the highest points average of the modern era with 37.1. This is followed by James Harden (2018/19) with 36.1.

Allen Iverson on Luka Doncic: “He’s so cool, he’s got swag”

An old player just talks about how everything used to be better? No, just the opposite. For example, when he talked about Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, he showed nothing but respect for his achievements.

“His style is mixed with streetball. He has his own pace. He plays like a black man, has swag and is so cool out there. Everything is just slow, just great moves, just pure basketball. He shoots the lights out.”

Doncic is averaging 34.2 points, 8.8 rebounds and 9.5 assists per game so far this season. He is therefore considered one of the MVP candidates.
