Algerian Judo Team Shines at African Open of Algiers

ALGIERS – The Algerian judo selection (men/women) occupies second place in the provisional medal table of the international tournament “African Open of Algiers”, at the end of the first day of competition, contested Saturday at the Coupole du Complexe Olympic Mohamed Boudiaf.

The Algerians gleaned a provisional total of 18 medals (2 gold, 5 silver and 11 bronze), placing themselves behind Tunisia (1st) with 4 gold and 2 bronze, while South Africa completed the podium, with 1 gold.

The two Algerian gold medals were the work of Kaïs Moudather (-66 kg) and Waïl Ezzine (-73 kg), while their compatriots Aymen Denni (-60 kg), Ayoub Benlaribi (-66 kg), Faïza Aïssahine (-52 kg), Mahfoud Zerrouk (-73 kg) and Amina Rezzoug (-63 kg) settled for silver.

The Algerian harvest was enhanced by eleven bronze medals, won by Abderraouf Guerbaâ (-60 kg), Abderrahim Lalioui (-60 kg), Amine Chenafa (-66 kg), Djeddi Oussama (-73 kg), Abdelkader Amrouche (-73 kg), Houria Kaddour (-48 kg), Cherine Abdellaoui (-52 kg), Rania Naït Amara (-52 kg), Hala Zerrouk (-57 kg), Chaïma Kaddour (-63 kg) and Fatima Zahra Necibi (-63 kg) .

Organized on February 17 and 18 at the Coupole of the Mohamed Boudiaf Olympic Complex, the competition attracted the participation of 150 judokas (100 men and 50 women), representing 19 countries, from five continents.

Indeed, in addition to African countries, the competition records the participation of certain nations from the four corners of the world, notably the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Bulgaria, Great Britain and Thailand.

Their presence is explained by the fact that the Algiers African Open can contribute to improving their Olympic Ranking, with a view to qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as it puts 100 points at stake.

The second day of competition, scheduled for Sunday, will see the entry into the running of the -81 kg, -90 kg, -100 kg and +100 kg categories for men, as well as those of -70 kg, -78 kg and + 78 kg for the ladies.
