Aida Román Aims for Paris 2024 Olympics: Advances in National Qualifiers

The archery shooter Aida Román, representative of Puebla since 2020, continues in the race towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after successfully passing the country’s first qualifier held at the National Center for the Development of Sports Talents and High Performance (CNAR) in the last week.

Román finished in fourth place among the best eight women’s arrows in Mexico to access the fourth and final round of the qualifier.

The state representative scored 103 points, ranking behind Alejandra Valencia Trujillo (Sonora) with 205 points, Ángela Ruiz Rosales (Coahuila) with 201 and Ana Paula Vázquez Flores (Coahuila) with 126 points.

All this with the aim of being one of the six starting arrows of Mexico for 2024. That is, in the CNAR selection process, not only those who will go to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be defined; The elements that will represent the country in the most important competitions of the year will also be defined.

Olympic and world medalist

Aida Román has won the silver medal in individual archery in London 2012; as well as champion of Central America and the Caribbean in Mayagüez 2010.

In London 2012, on the way to the medal she beat the Japanese Miki Kanei in the round of 16 by two points, the Italian Pia Lionetti in the quarterfinals and the Mexican, who later won the bronze, Mariana Avitia.

In the semifinals, she lost to South Korea’s representative, Ki Bo Bae. All this after tying the set scores with her and then losing by an arrow in sudden death.

The Korean’s arrow touched the nine-point line and Román’s arrow hit the eight. Ki Bo Bae then won the gold by a few centimeters. Two years after London, Román was crowned world champion in Nimes, France.
