A trial has started on the accusation of sexual violence against football star Alvis

The trial is scheduled to last at least until Wednesday.

Alvis is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub on December 30, 2022. The former defender of the “Barcelona” club has been in the investigative prison since January of last year. His pleas to release the footballer on bail were rejected because the court believed he could flee.

Alvis has denied wrongdoing, claiming he had sex with the accuser. He was indicted by an investigating judge in August, and the court said there was enough evidence to go to trial.

The State Prosecutor’s Office is requesting a nine-year prison sentence. Attorneys representing the alleged victim want him to spend 12 years behind bars. Also, in the event of a conviction, he will have to pay the victim EUR 150,000 in compensation and court costs.

Alves, 40, has won 42 football trophies, including lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy three times with Barcelona and winning the Copa America twice with Brazil.

In the previous World Cup in Qatar, he played in his third World Championship. His contract with Mexican club Mexico City UNAM (“Pumas”) was suspended after his arrest in Spain.
