Perfect competition day for the 1st Fulda Judo Club at the Hessian Individual Championships U18/U21 in Bad Hersfeld. The Fulda judokas secured two titles and a silver and bronze medal.

The start of the new tournament season couldn’t have gone better for the athletes of the 1st Fulda Judo Club. All four Fulda judokas won a medal and have qualified for the Southwest German Championships next weekend in Siershahn (Rhineland-Palatinate). “This is a great result,” says coach Mike Thiel happily.

This year’s Hessen Championships for the U18/U21 were organized by the judo departments of the Turnverein 1848 Hersfeld eV and the TV Germania Nentershausen eV in the TV Bad Hersfeld gymnasium. Almost 170 judokas from Hesse fought for the title in various weight classes.

The U18 age group started first in the morning. Franziska Lomb (-57kg) got off to a great start, and after five early victories she was able to celebrate her sixth Hesse championship title in a row. Lomb was able to win the first three encounters against Luisa Dülz (SKG Ober-Ramstadt), Katharina Riehl (TG Hofheim 1845 eV) and Elena Peppinghaus (Judo-Club Frankfurt am Main eV) with holds on the ground before she beat Maria in the semi-finals Neumann (TSG Blau Gold Gießen eV) “swept” off the mat within a few seconds with an Uchi Mata. In the final that followed, there was an exciting exchange of blows on equal terms with her training partner Luisa Stock from the Homburger Turngemeinde 1846 eV, which Lomb ultimately won with two Waza-Ari scores.

Michelle Müller (-48kg) also hunted for medals in the female U18 category. In a strong first fight against the eventual Hesse champion Iana Prituleac (TSV Blau Gold Gießen), Müller fell behind after two minutes, which she was unable to catch up with despite great efforts. After almost four minutes, Prituleac took second place with a hold and Müller had to admit defeat. In the second fight against Lilly Christmann (SV Fun Ball Dortelweil eV) she was even more motivated and got off to a perfect start. Müller brought Christmann to the mat with a shoulder throw (Morote-seoi-nage) within just five seconds of fighting time and was therefore able to celebrate a silver medal.

Fabian Hohmann (-60kg) contributed the missing bronze medal to the complete set of medals. In the first fight against Artem Varych (TSV Blau Gold Gießen), Hohmann took the lead with a Waza-Ari (O-uchi-gari) before Varych had to admit defeat with Hansoku-make (three Shido penalties). Hohmann then met Vitalii Markov (JC Wiesbaden 1922 eV) and Michael Bär (TSV Eintracht Stadtallendorf), whom he gave no chance with his special Uchi Mata technique. In the semi-final against his long-term rival from Hesse, Lukas Fertig (Homburger Turngemeinde 1846 eV), a hold (Sankaku) forced Hohmann to give up. Hohmann had to fight the battle for third place again against Vitalii Markov, whom he sent to the mat with Uchi Mata after a few seconds.

The fights in the U21 age group started in the afternoon. Lara Schäfer worked for the 1st Fulda Judo Club. Schäfer left no stone unturned and “rushed like a whirlwind” through the -57kg weight class. Schäfer was able to win both fights against Evelin Widiker (TSG Blau-Gold Gießen) and Katharina Riehl (TG Hochheim 1845 eV) within a few seconds with her special technique Uchi Mata. An impressive performance from Schäfer, who also deservedly won the title of Hesse champion with this strong performance.

As athletes in the Hessian state squad, all four judokas show great commitment and love for the sport. In addition to club training and strength training in Fulda, they train several times a week in the Rhine-Main area and regularly take part in tournaments and squad activities on the weekends. “I am pleased that all four were able to be rewarded with medals for their above-average commitment,” sums up Mike Thiel. “Now it’s time to secure a ticket for the German Championships in Leipzig (U18) and Frankfurt Oder (U21) next weekend with a placement at the Southwest German Championships.”

A cooperation with the Homburger Turngemeinde 1846 eV enables the two Fulda judokas Franziska Lomb and Michelle Müller to get a better taste of international judo this year. The 1st Fulda Judo Club is proud of the opportunities this cooperation offers and wishes them both much success and many great new experiences. (pm) +++
