10-Year-Old Orange Belt Joel Luli Wins Best Athlete Title at Eighth Budokan Trophy Competition

It was Joel Luli (photo), a 10-year-old orange belt, who won the title of best athlete at the eighth Budokan Trophy, the traditional competition organized by the amateur sports association of the same name in San Mauro Pascoli reserved for its members.

Around 120 athletes aged 7 to 16 registered in the three locations of San Mauro Pascoli, San Vito and Sant’Angelo competed on four tatamis in individual kata and kumite tests.

The competition was divided into two rounds. In the first, Davide De Riso was awarded as best white belt and Massimo Bauleo as best yellow belt. In the second round, the proclamation of the best athlete in the competition saw the victory of Joel Luli, who placed first in both kata and kumite, with excellent scores. The coveted trophy goes to him, after the victory of Noemi Fulvi in 2023 and Noemi Antonelli in 2022.

As per tradition, to confirm the validity of the conquest of this title, Joel also passed the board breaking test with two gyaku tsuki worthy of the best athlete in the competition. The organizational machine of the Budokan San Mauro, under the guidance of the masters Andrea Silenzi and Daniele Arcangeli, saw the participation of around thirty black belt referees including former students who, with a spirit of affection and friendship, return to give their help every year in this event. Also present were around fifteen table judges and tatami help staff, parents of the Budofans group, coordinated by maestro Valentina Nicoletti.

“This great participation is an opportunity to involve and make people understand how many problems and difficulties there could be behind an event of this kind – said the teachers –. Above all, however, it allows us to share with our students and parents how much passion and emotions are there in what we do, which would be impossible to describe in words.”
