For this last NFL column of the season, we dive into some of the main issues that should attract attention over the coming months.

What will the Bears do with the 1st pick?

The biggest source of speculation in the NFL right now is the direction the Chicago Bears are going to take with the very first pick in the next draft.

This selection, acquired via transaction with the Carolina Panthers last year, could allow Chicago to get their hands on a promising quarterback in the person of Caleb Williams. The University of Southern California product has everything it takes to become a star in this league.

The Bears also have quarterback Justin Fields in their possession. Still relatively young, Fields has sometimes demonstrated great things. Is he the man for the job? That’s the whole intrigue. It is true that he was very poorly surrounded, but he also showed obvious deficiencies in his reading of the game.

No matter what Chicago decides to do, it’s going to involve a major transaction. It would take a mountain of gold for him to give up the first pick, and there is also a market for Fields since several organizations are desperate for a quarterback worthy of the name.

Better supervised, Fields, a player with athletic abilities clearly above average, can do damage in this league.

The next few weeks will be fascinating in Illinois.

Can Aaron Rodgers get back to his level with the Jets?

Acquired at a high price by the New York Jets, veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers played only four games before tearing his Achilles tendon, ending his season at the same time. It was a huge blow to the morale of the Jets as Rodgers had to restore confidence to an attack that had been in complete decline for too long.

Having done everything to accelerate his return to action, Rodgers is visibly motivated to return to action in 2024 at the age of 40. However, it is legitimate to wonder what he will be able to accomplish on the field.

Certainly, Rodgers was the most valuable player in 2020 and 2021, but the 2022 campaign, his last with the Green Bay Packers, had proven to be completely strong disappointing. Simple accident or start of decline? The answer will come next September.

For the sake of his career, head coach Robert Saleh will pray hard for a Rodgers of good times.

What will happen with the Eagles?

The 2023 season got off to a brilliant start for the Philadelphia Eagles as they posted a record of ten wins and one meager defeat. The beating suffered against the San Francisco 49ers (42 to 19 loss) however made this team explode. She finished the year with six defeats in seven matches, including an early ouster in the first round of the playoffs.

Super Bowl finalists for the 2022 season, the representatives of the city of brotherly love are banking on a roster full of talent. However, serious questions must be asked about the way things are done. Firing defensive coordinator Sean Desai looks like a desperate attempt by head coach Nick Sirianni to keep his job.

If this doesn’t happen again, Sirianni won’t have to wait long to show up at the office and bang her nose against the door.

The pressure will be very strong in Philadelphia. All the tools are there to win, but has the end of the season left irreversible damage?

Leaving Denver for Russell Wilson?

At the conclusion of the most recent campaign, the Broncos surprised everyone by announcing that quarterback Russell Wilson was placed on the bench for the final duels of the season. Without being extraordinary, Wilson was not bad under the orders of head coach Sean Payton.

Wilson, however, argued that he was sidelined due to a contract dispute with the Broncos. Indeed, they want him to restructure his expensive pact of 242.6 million over five years and, above all, to avoid an injury.

What you need to understand is that if Wilson is unable to pass a physical test at the start of the new NFL year, the Broncos must pay him the staggering sum of 37 million. Denver clearly didn’t want to take the chance of Wilson suffering an injury.

This chicane, however, brings a lot of uncertainty around the future of the quarterback in Colorado. The Broncos have yet to make a decision, but there appears to be a real possibility of Wilson being released in the near future. This would inevitably place the Broncos in a very complex financial situation with, in particular, a penalty of 85 million on the payroll.

Holders of the 12th choice in the next draft, the Colorado representatives will do everything in their power to acquire a young quarterback.

What will the post-Belichick era be like in New England?

While the Chiefs have officially moved into dynasty status, that of the Patriots is history for good. Architect of the Patriots’ supremacy over a period of 18 years, head coach Bill Belichick is no longer at the helm of the ship. It is now a former star of the team, Jared Mayo, who takes on the heavy mandate of filling the shoes of the venerable Bill.

The state of the roster left by Belichick, however, is a far cry from what it has been in the past. The club put up an atrocious record of four wins and 13 losses, which earned them third place in the next NFL auction.

Identified as the successor to Tom Brady, quarterback Mac Jones is clearly not the man for the job. The Patriots must therefore absolutely find a quarterback worthy of the name to give direction to the team. We also need to rebuild the entire attack as it requires an injection of youth and talent at all levels.

There is no shortage of construction sites for Mayo and his acolytes!
