Since the merger of eight municipalities in 2022, the municipality of Zurzach has been the largest in the canton in terms of area. At the third New Year’s aperitif in its history, the community honored the athlete of the year for the first time in the presence of sports director Alex Hürzeler.
Zurzach started the year 2024 with a premiere: the community honored judoka Marvin Kingsley for the first time on Sunday as an athlete of the year. “This opens the sporting year,” said Ammann Andi Meier to the several hundred guests, alluding to the major event in June, the Aargau Cantonal Wrestling Festival. But before the award was presented, sports director Alex Hürzeler addressed the guests. Because the new year for Zurzach is all about sport, he will dedicate himself to this topic. Zurzach is home to more than 100 clubs that are an important pillar of sport. “That’s an impressive number.” They are places for sporting activities, cultural exchange – and the glue that holds the village community together.
In his speech, Government Councilor Alex Hürzeler revealed that he would not be personally present at the Aargau Cantonal Wrestling Festival, but would be at the Culture Night in May and at the vernissage of the first Zurzach volume of the series “The Art Monuments of the Canton of Aargau” in the fall.

With reference to the new sports law, the sports director looked to the future: The new law will be heard in the spring, which, among other things, will determine the goals and financing options for state sports funding and specify the tasks of the municipalities, associations and the canton. According to Hürzeler, it should come into force in 2025 at the earliest.
In his speech, Ammann Andi Meier looked back on the year 2023, which demanded a lot from the community. He called the tunnel festival at the beginning of June, which opened the eastern bypass project of the century, a big highlight. He also played a video that looked back on the big inauguration ceremony.
As a result of the new bypass tunnel, the area was traffic-calmed and the local council was able to make a first important decision: the new traffic regime in Schwertgasse, which will become a meeting zone at 20 km/h. “This decision was also accompanied by emotions,” said Andi Meier.
There will also be groundbreaking decisions in the new year that will have a not insignificant impact on finances, according to Ammann: for example, the renovation of the Regibad (the Sommergmeind 2023 approved a planning loan of 390,000 francs) and the new building, which cost around 11.6 million francs of the town hall (the business will soon be presented to the people).
