Zaanse Athletes Excel in Weekend Sports Competitions

In general it was a good weekend for the Zaanse athletes. The gentlemen of ZV de Zaan qualified for the semi-finals of the KNZB Cup, KZ is firmly in the top 4 of the korfball league and we have a number of badminton champions to congratulate.

Unfortunately, the false start of Zaandijk rugby also continued and VV Zaanstad lost valuable points.

These are the sports results of January 26, 27 and 28.

Water polo

This weekend ZV de Zaan men 1 played twice against ZVL from Leiden. On Friday evening it was about a place in the KNZB Cup.

After a comfortable 7-2 lead for the home club halfway through the game, ZVL came back strongly and the team from Leiden even led 10-11 until two seconds before the end. With a devastating shot, Daan Bakker ensured that penalty throws had to decide the score, 11-11.

In that series, De Zaan goalkeeper Ted Huijsman stopped two and the ZVL goalkeeper one. The last ZVL penalty throw was no longer mentioned, 15 – 13.

De Zaan stepped out of the water with relief.

Korfball (Room)

The second half of the indoor season started this weekend. KZ is in good shape in the korfball league with a shared first place. Tim Bakker’s team must finish in the top 4 to reach the play-offs for the national championship and are now even six points clear of 5th place.

Groen Geel was unable to win against direct competitor DOS ’46 and remains in 9th place.

Unfortunately, we have to report that KVZ ’23 is still on the hunt for the first victory in the hall in the transitional class. On Saturday they lost to Vitesse by a goal difference.

Volley-ball

This week there were only away matches for the Zaanse volleyball players. Zaanstad was 2nd and visited number 8 of the top division. Unfortunately there was a loss. As a result, Zaanstad drops to place 3.

In the first division, leader Compaen from Oostzaan visited number 11 USV Protos. There the set scores were very close to each other, but they still won well. The difference with number 2 Dordrecht is now five points. From Utrecht we received the following report from Compaen:

Compaen slipped past the gate of Protos’ Hell on Saturday. Purgatory was already audible, palpable, smellable, visible, and ready to be devoured when the escape came. For the Oostzaan volleyball players, the damage was limited to burns due to the 2-3 victory after falling behind 2-0 in sets.
The formation of coach Mark Schoonen has not yet had to suffer a defeat with 3-1 or 4-0 this competition. That seemed to happen around half past five in the Olympos sports complex. Just like in football, this was once again proof that sports teams from Utrecht are able to unleash unexpected forces in confrontations with opponents from Amsterdam and the surrounding area. The students from the cathedral city demonstrated a work ethic that gives hope to BV Nederland.

Compaen should have known from the many mutual meetings in recent seasons that Protos can always do something more. In mid-October, the Oostzaners barely managed to settle four sets in their favor with a difference of a few points. So it all turned out well for the leader in the first division. Compaen had to go to the bottom, but managed to tip the balance to four victories in the seventh five-setter of this competition. For the first time there was a positive ending after a 2-0 deficit.
The leader’s performance was tepid, possibly partly due to a mediocre training week due to absences due to injuries or work commitments. Too often it had to come in sets from a single star. Not enough to put the number 11 in the rankings firmly against the wall. There was actually only one constant factor throughout the game: middle blocker Evert Hankes. Even on the other side of the net, he would probably have been one of the youngest players on the team. With four attack points and seven killblocks, he showed that he might be the ‘next big thing’ from Compaen’s talent fund.

In the opening set it was Koen van de Wetering who led his team. Yet his ten attack points were insufficient. The Oostzaners left four set points unused, allowing the enthusiastically playing Protos, strongly encouraged by a student legion, to triumph 32-30.
Things went from bad to worse at Compaen after that. Schoonen emphasized before the match that the opponent had nothing to lose, but the visitors were still unable to provide sufficient resistance to the uninhibited play. Protos always had a lead of a few points and held it until the end (25-22).
The recovery started in the third set. Substitute Jelmer de Jong scored six accurate smashes and left his mark saves providing a spark for his teammates in the backfield. David Bes also came out nicely and that was enough for a win 22-25.
At 14-18 in the fourth set, Compaen seemed to convincingly walk to extra time. Ketsers on the Protos storage brought the tension back. At 23-23, the home team was only two points away from a sensation. That didn’t happen because De Jong neatly converted an emergency ball on set point.
In the fifth set, both teams barely conceded anything to each other for a long time. The field change took place at 8-7 and at 11-12 it was still unclear who would emerge as the winner. A killblock from Bram Bekebrede caused the break, after which Protos finally surrendered (11-15). With the win via 2-3, Compaen only lost one point of the lead over Next Volley. It was nice that the rivals Limax 2 and Huizen 2 also reached a five-setter in their mutual match. Compaen awaits the top match against Limax 2 at home on Saturday.’

In the women’s competition, Zaanstad 2 in particular did not have an easy time. They visited the leader and, as expected, the difference was made by the home team.
Zaanstad ladies 1 managed to win and Compaen just came up short.

The score now looks like this, both Zaanstad women’s teams are now tied in the standings.

Badminton

The final battle was struck in badminton this weekend. Dorien Schreurs tells us about the denouements for Matchpoint 1 and 2:

‘Matchpoint 1 that played away against van Zijderveld 5 and Matchpoint 2 that played at Gaasperdam 5, their direct competitor in the rankings. Although both teams have climbed somewhat in the rankings, the final scores are so close and the last match is also important for enforcement.
Team 1 already appeared to be safe from relegation next year. Possibilities for a 4th or 5th place, but that was it. The doubles were won after a strong come-back by the ladies, in which substitute Ilse fought bravely. Because 3 of the 4 singles were lost (only Dorthe was able to convert her 1st ladies’ singles into a win), the team went into the mixes with a 3-3 draw.
The mixes were also distributed fairly, which brought the final score to 4-4. This team ended the year well with a dinner afterwards, they deserved it!
Team 2, which occupied the last place in the rankings halfway through the competition in the 5th division, won this weekend by a large margin against Gaasperdam. The score was no less than 6-2, with which they took over 5th place in the rankings from Gaasperdam. Team 2 also secures their place in the 5th division.
This ends the competition and marks the beginning of a period with mainly tournaments.
The new competition season will start again in September.’

We also received jubilant messages in the mail from another association, the Shuttle, from Wormer. They celebrated no fewer than three championships this weekend. Their 2nd, 5th and 6th teams could call themselves the best in the sixth, seventh and eighth divisions respectively.

Handball

Last week the men of Zaanstreek suffered a loss of points. Fortunately, they were able to cope as far as the standings are concerned, they are still in the lead. On Sunday they went all out again at home to strengthen their lead against the bottom line from Almere. That certainly worked. This is also evident from the report of player Wouter van Lienen:

‘Today a match against the red lantern of the competition who showed up with a tight selection. Due to a slight overconfidence they were able to stay at 19-15 until half time, but after 20-18 the turbo went on and we went to 31-18 with the final score 35-21’

Rugby

A false start for Zaandijk in phase 2 of the rugby year. The first match against Spakenburg was lost on their own field and last week the match in Hilversum was canceled due to ice on the field. On Sunday, the Zaankanters lost points again in Deventer.
