Coach Xavi has announced his retirement from FC Barcelona. The search for a successor is difficult because some well-known candidates are still under contract. Four German coaches are on the list.

The complicated search for a successor to outgoing coach Xavi has begun at FC Barcelona. The 44-year-old declared on Saturday evening after the bitter 3:5 against Villarreal FC that he wanted to resign from his position on June 30th.

Xavi is convinced that the team needs a change of course: “I don’t want to be a problem. I want the best for the club. I think it’s good for everyone to relax the situation.” The pressure on the coach of one of the best clubs in the world has become too great in the past few months. Xavi spoke of a “terrible toll on mental health and mood.”

Of course, a number of candidates are now being traded in connection with the Xavi successor. One name that keeps coming up is that of Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta. Coming from the Barça youth system and as a former assistant coach to Pep Guardiola, he shares the same philosophy. However, the Basque is tied to the Gunners until 2025.

Barca President Laporta appreciates Hansi Flick

The Spanish media, such as “Mundo Deportivo”, also mentions some German coaches who would at least be free in the summer. Above all, of course, Jürgen Klopp, who wants to take a break after his announced departure from Liverpool FC.

“Bild” also lists Hansi Flick, the former national coach has been without a coaching job since leaving the DFB in September 2023. Barca President Joan Laporta is said to have high regard for the 58-year-old, and Flick himself is not averse to playing in a foreign league, it is said.

The British “Sun” also brings Julian Nagelsmann into the conversation. After all, his contract as national coach expires in the summer. Two former coaches who led the club to Champions League victories are also highly valued in Barcelona: Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique, whose contracts with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain run until 2025. “I have nothing to say on the subject,” said Enrique after the 2-2 draw against Stade Brest on Sunday.

FC Bayern – Thomas Tuchel “excites abroad”

Thomas Tuchel, on the other hand, unintentionally brought himself into the conversation. During a visit to the fan club in Heidenheim, the FC Bayern coach said: “I would definitely be interested in going abroad again.” The Spanish Primera Division is an “extraordinary league” and the style of play is “characterized by an incredible amount of self-confidence”.

The Munich coach continued to praise: “When you talk to Spanish players, you have the feeling that you are talking to people.” The fact that Tuchel spoke so openly about future plans, even though FC Bayern is currently floundering in terms of sport, drew heavy criticism.
