VIDEO ⟩ Rubiales, involved in the Spanish football kiss scandal, will stand trial

Rubiales, while still president of the RFEF, kissed national team player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s women’s national team won the 2023 World Cup final against the will of the soccer player.

Rubiales previously said the kiss was mutual and refused to resign, but Hermoso denied it, saying she did not want the kiss and later filed a complaint against the RFEF president with the prosecutor’s office. Last September, Rubiales resigned as RFEF president and FIFA vice president.

The investigating judge’s statement indicated that the investigation conducted showed that Rubiales’ kiss was not consensual and was carried out in a surprising manner. A court date will be announced later.

Prosecutors also accused Rubiales of sexual assault and of trying to coerce Hermoso into publicly supporting him while some of the public turned against him.

The International Association of Football Federations (FIFA) handed Rubiales a three-year suspension for the incident.

The 46-year-old Rubiales held the position of RFEF president since 2018.
