VfL Bochum signs Agon Elezi from Croatian First Division

Shortly before the transfer deadline, VfL Bochum landed Agon Elezi. The national player comes to the Ruhr area from NK Varazdin in the Croatian first division.

“With Agon Elezi, a short-term market opportunity arose that we definitely wanted to take advantage of,” says VfL sports director Marc Lettau about the new signing: “He has great potential and we believe he can make the leap into the Bundesliga.” The length of the contract alone shows that this is the case; the 22-year-old signed until June 30, 2027.

Elezi made headlines early on, celebrating his professional debut in North Macedonia at the age of 16 for Shkupi and setting a new record in his homeland. He later made the jump to the Croatian first division via Albania (Skenderbeu), where he scored six goals in 60 league games for NK Varazdin.

It could have been more if he hadn’t suffered a torn cruciate ligament at the start of the 2021/22 season, which kept him out for months. Elezi went through all the junior selections for North Macedonia and is now part of the senior national team (nine international matches).

Now he’s making the jump to the Bundesliga, but Bochum wants to give the versatile midfielder the time he needs to adapt. “But we also know that the leap into the Bundesliga is big. That’s why we will introduce him to this challenge step by step,” said sports director Patrick Fabian.

Samir Toplak often talked about VfL and the Bundesliga.

Even if he is probably only planned as a prospective player, Elezi himself is very excited about his upcoming club, which also has to do with the former Bochum player Samir Toplak (69 games, three goals for VfL between 1998 and 2002). He is currently training HNK Gorica in Croatia, but it was he who brought Elezi to NK Varazdin in 2020.

“My ex-coach Samir Toplak often talked about VfL and the Bundesliga,” revealed Elezi and said: “Now I can hardly wait to get to know the team and the club better. I think that VfL is the perfect next step in my career.” VfL did not provide any information about the amount of the transfer fee. It can be assumed that this was not particularly high as Elezi’s contract would have expired in the summer.

After the returnee Andreas Luthe, Elezi is the second newcomer to the 14th table.
