NFL, Week 17 – Winner of the week: Lamar Jackson (QB, Baltimore Ravens)
Here’s your new MVP, ladies and gentlemen! The crushing victory over the San Francisco 49ers had pushed Lamar Jackson (26) to the top of the MVP rankings, and with another masterful performance in the 59:19 win over the Miami Dolphins, he probably made the award perfect. The decision will be made on Wednesday as to whether he will be allowed to play again at the end of the regular season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but since the Ravens have already secured the top seed and thus home playoff rights in the AFC, there is actually no such option Reason.
So the statline of MVP Patrick Mahomes’ successor should look like this:
When it comes to statistics, Jackson can’t keep up here; the situation is similar when compared to the MVPs of the last few years. It’s not for nothing that he wasn’t one of the favorites for the award for a long time. But the way he performed against strong opponents in the last few weeks will definitely make him a deserving winner. Especially since the competition (Mahomes, Josh Allen, etc.) wasn’t really convincing.
What should not be forgotten: When he won the award for the first time in 2019, Jackson, at 22, basically took the league by storm. There are now no more secrets about his game – but you still can’t stop him.
The only thing he is missing is success in the playoffs: he has been able to play in the postseason four times so far, most recently three years ago. However, he was only able to win one game, in 2020 in the wildcard round against the Tennessee Titans (20:13).
