Union with great concerns towards the Anderlecht diptych

Union SG has had a great first half of the season. But after the winter break, the people of Brussels will also have to harvest. And for this they will not be able to call on some important forces in the coming weeks.

Last summer, the Unionists saw a long list of strong players leave in addition to their trainer. But the outgoing transfers were handled perfectly. Moreover, new coach Alexander Blessin continued the good work of his predecessors and added some personal touches.

The results are worth seeing. Union qualified for the intermediate round in the Conference League and advanced to the quarter-finals of the Croky Cup. In addition, after 20 match days, they are in the lead with a six-point lead over first pursuer Anderlecht.

Brussels derbies

But the people of Brussels realize all too well that they currently have nothing in their hands and that the road to prizes is still long. This path has already been started with a number of important agreements. The cup cracker against Anderlecht will follow shortly after the winter break. And a week and a half later, the Brussels rivals also compete against each other in the competition.

However, Blessin will be missing some important players in those derbies. For example, top scorer Mohamed Amoura is going to the Africa Cup with Algeria. He won’t be back until the end of January at the earliest. The same applies to Thierry Lazare, who was included in the Ivory Coast selection.

Machida also away for a while

And on Monday the absence of a third strongman was confirmed. For example, Koki Machida was included in Japan’s official selection for the Asian Cup. The Japanese will play their last group match on January 24, but are one of the favorites for the final victory. The defensive mainstay will normally not be there in the double confrontation with Anderlecht.
