The dispute between Dietmar Hamann and FC Bayern threatened to escalate. After the TV expert’s criticism, the Munich team publicly attacked their ex-player. Now Hamann apologizes. He didn’t reflect coach Tuchel correctly.

It was early afternoon when the announcement was spread – and Dietmar Hamann, former national player and Sky expert since 2017, now took a stand in the dispute with FC Bayern.

“We have within the framework of Sky90 discussed the Bundesliga matchday intensively and also about FC Bayern and its previous performances,” Hamann was quoted as saying by Sky: “Before the broadcast, I heard Thomas Tuchel’s statement from the fan festival in the mask. In connection with the announcement of Xavi’s resignation from FC Barcelona and the current situation at FC Bayern, I found the statement inappropriate. Later in the emotional discussion I referred to it and did not correctly reproduce Thomas Tuchel’s statement or misinterpreted it. He didn’t say that he would like to train in Barcelona or Spain. I would like to apologize to Thomas Tuchel and Bayern for this.”

It was a response to the statements made by FC Bayern’s bosses, who had reacted the day before to criticism of coach Thomas Tuchel after his statements about the appeal of a position abroad with a clear rebuke to the critics. Bayern announced that they would no longer accept unobjective statements.

The counterattack by the Bayern bosses

“On Sunday, as part of a fan club visit, our head coach Thomas Tuchel was asked by the supporters about his coaching career and his previous experiences abroad at Paris St. Germain and Chelsea FC and of course he gave information about this in the conversation. He also answered general questions from fans about Spain as a football country,” said the joint statement from CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sports director Christoph Freund.

And further: “He never spoke about Xavi Hernández and his successor, as was subsequently falsely claimed. We will no longer accept such unobjective statements directed against our coach, which always come from the same place.”

The trigger was the following sentences from Hamann: “Then he sits down and talks about Xavi, about the successor and that he would like to train in Barcelona or Spain. That’s a disgrace. He’s a very intelligent man, something like that doesn’t just slip out of his mouth. Only he has to know one thing: If you are an employee of FC Bayern, taking on the management – that was rarely a good idea.

Tuchel had spoken generally about a possible coaching position in other European countries. “Abroad will definitely appeal to me again, in general,” said the former coach of Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea FC. He finds the league in Spain “extraordinary” because it is “characterized by insane self-confidence”. “When you talk to Spanish players, you have the feeling that you talk to people very quickly and there are no empty phrases and no invisible wall.”
