Paula Badosa is in round three in Melbourne
Soulmates – according to current science, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa are forever. It is to be hoped that the two will still be a conventional couple in real life. But not confirmed. Anyway: Wednesday was a good day for “Tsitsidosa”. And that wasn’t necessarily to be expected.
Because, to start with last year’s finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas: the match scheduled against Jordan Thompson had just as much upset potential as that of Paula Badosa against Anastasia Pavlyuchenko. Small caveat: After Badosa wasn’t able to play a single match between Wimbledon and the beginning of this season, she obviously didn’t go into the match with the Russian as the favorite.
Tsitsipas now against van Assche
Tsitsipas had an intensive exchange with the local hero Thompson over a playing time of 3:36 hours. A fifth set would have been possible, but the Greek would be happy to take it with 4:6, 7:6 (6), 6:2 and 7:6 (4) and so made it to the third round in four rounds . Because Thompson had interrupted Rafael Nadal’s comeback in Brisbane – after defending match points. The Australian’s fighting qualities are beyond question.
In round three, Tsitsipas, who was seeded eighth, will now face Luca van Assche, who had to go the full distance against Lorenzo Musetti. But they were able to win the last set 6-0 in a very sporty manner.
Anisimova is waiting for Badosa
Paula Badosa, on the other hand, after her opening win against Taylor Townsend, has now also succeeded against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, with 6:3 and 6:2 quite clearly. This has now brought her a meeting with Amanda Anisimova, the highly talented American who took a long, voluntary break last year.
Two difficult but solvable tasks for Tsitsidosa. And so Friday could go just as well as today’s Wednesday.
