FC Bayern Munich will soon have a sports director again. According to consistent media reports, Max Eberl will start work in the second half of the season.

FC Bayern Munich has signed Max Eberl as its new sports director. As is further reported, the supervisory board of the record football champions is to elevate the 50-year-old to the position of sports director at its meeting at the end of February. Eberl will therefore sign a long-term contract in Munich and take up his position in the current season. This is what Sky and the Bild newspaper report.

The long-time Gladbacher manager Eberl, who most recently worked for Leipzig, has long been considered FC Bayern’s preferred candidate. He was particularly popular with Honorary President Uli Hoeneß and was considered the preferred candidate for the vacant position.

Management level complete with Eberl again

By signing Eberl, the Munich team would have clarified an important personnel detail during the restructuring of the management team. The renovation became necessary after the club parted ways with CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic at the end of May last year. Kahn’s position was taken over by long-time finance chief Jan-Christian Dreesen, while Salihamidzic’s position initially remained vacant.

Hoeneß emphasized last year that “for the next six to twelve months we will have the staffing that the future should have.” Christoph Freund, who was signed by RB Salzburg in September, is the Munich team’s sports director.

FC Bayern past as a player

Eberl, who was born in Lower Bavaria, played for the amateurs of FC Bayern in the early 1990s and also played professionally for the Munich team. As a result of his commitment, FC Bayern’s board of directors will expand again. In addition to CEO Dreesen, the committee includes Michael Diederich and Andreas Jung. However, Jung has already announced his departure for the summer of 2024.

Leipzig parted ways with Eberl at the end of September shortly before the top game against FC Bayern. From the RB bosses’ point of view, the reason was Eberl’s lack of commitment to Leipzig. “FC Bayern has nothing at all to do with Max Eberl’s release from Leipzig,” emphasized President Herbert Hainer last year.

The former Gladbach manager has not only been linked with a possible move to Bayern, but also to Liverpool. According to dpa information, the Saxons demanded around five million euros as a transfer fee. RB and Eberl had apparently agreed on this in the event that the manager found a new club.
