Tracy Durhone: Honoring the Quadricolor in Competition

Tracy Durhone has honored the quadricolor in various competitions.

Tracy Durhone wrote the history of Mauritian judo. Indeed, she won a gold medal in the +78 kg category at the last Francophonie Games, held from July 28 to August 6 in Kinsasha, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The very first obtained by a Mauritian judoka at this sporting event.

“Tracy demonstrated her full potential through her performance. And I firmly believe that the best is yet to come for her. It was an immense joy to see her fight the way she did. She showed herself to be diligent and respectful of the instructions”declared the head coach, Priscilla Chery.

The latter also attributes Tracy Durhone’s triumph to her determination and resilience. Because, despite the difficulties caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, and those present in various forms, in the journey of an athlete – and of everyone – Tracy Durhone is always driven by the desire to move forward. To go further, higher.

A few days after her dedication to the Francophonie Games, Tracy Durhone distinguished herself with a bronze medal at the Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) in Madagascar. And, subsequently, at the Senior African Championships in Casablanca, Egypt, she confirmed her rise to power by winning bronze.

In mom’s footsteps

It was his very first African podium. And, we can be sure that it will not be the last. Because, Tracy Durhone, just in her twenties, represents the future of Mauritian judo. Her journey in this year 2023 also means that Tracy Durhone is indeed following in the footsteps of her mother, Marie-Michelle, who has on numerous occasions honored the quadricolor, notably with her two African champion medals (1992 and 1998).

Also at the 2023 African Championships, Maurice enjoyed a second medal. Still in bronze, thanks to Rémi Feuillet. Otherwise, six other local fighters were competing in Casablanca, including Priscilla Morand and Christiane Legentil, who unfortunately were not able to secure a podium.

Like Tracy Durhone, another young judoka has written a new chapter in Mauritian judo. This is Lucas David who, at the end of last July, gave the country its very first podium in an African Cadet championship.

Let’s come to the JIOI now. If the announced objective was to harvest as good, if not a better harvest than in 2019 when we won six gold medals, it unfortunately could not be achieved. Maurice only recorded four gold medals, thanks in particular to Sarah-Sylva Rioux (-52 kg), Christiane Legentil (-57 kg), Kimberley Jean-Pierre (-63 kg) and Rémi Feuillet (-90 kg). Considering that we were playing away, with a very good level of competition, and add to that, the fact that the preparation of the majority of judokas was done exclusively on local soil (apart from that of Priscilla Morand, Rémi Feuillet and Christiane Legentil), the leaders of the Mauritius Judo Federation (FMJ) and the head coach, Priscilla Chery, said they were satisfied.
