Toronto Blue Jays Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Headlines Salary Arbitration Hearings Starting Tuesday

Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the headliner of 18 players whose salary arbitration hearings begin Tuesday in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The hearings will be held until February 16.

Guerrero asked for US$19.9 million, while the Jays offered him US$18.05 million. If the case is not settled before the hearing, it will be the highest salary awarded in arbitration, whether Guerrero wins or loses his case. Seattle Mariners outfielder Teoscar Hernandez holds the mark with a $14 million contract he got last year after losing his case.

A total of 198 players were eligible for arbitration as of last November’s deadline for clubs to submit qualifying offers to members of their 40-player roster. Most signed contracts on January 11, when teams and players exchanged salary proposals.

The biggest deal that day was the New York Yankees’ one-year, $31 million contract for outfielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres.

Players and teams unable to agree will present their points of view before a panel of three referees tasked with determining which side has best presented its arguments.

Baltimore Orioles left-hander Danny Coulombe avoided that process by agreeing to a one-year, $2.3 million contract Monday.

Adolis Garcia and the Texas Rangers are the two parties with the largest salary gap heading into the ratings at 1.9 million. The outfielder demands 6.9 million, while the team offers 5 million.

Over the last four seasons, decisions have been mostly favorable to the teams, especially last year, with 13 to 6. The owners have also won their cases 347 times to 257 since the implementation of salary arbitration. in 1974.
