Toni Polster, Austrian football legend and ex-Bundesliga striker, had to undergo emergency surgery and speaks serious words weeks later.

Vienna – Toni Polster is also known to German football fans. He played for 1. FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach. He enchanted fans in this country with his eye-catching hairstyle and numerous goals. In Austria he is currently the record goalscorer in the national team and a legend. Before the turn of the year, Polster had to undergo emergency surgery – and almost didn’t survive.

Toni Polster underwent emergency surgery on December 28th – “Wouldn’t have survived the night”

Polster suffered a perforated stomach on December 28th on the way to a press conference and had to undergo emergency surgery. “The doctors told me that if I had stayed at home that night, it would have been fatal if I hadn’t survived the night,” said Polster now. He wants to take more care of himself in the future: “I have to live healthier. I have to write that down in my logbook.” The 59-year-old is currently a Trianer at SC Wiener Viktoria.

The operation took three hours, said the former Gladbach and Cologne striker. “Thank God my wife was so insistent that we went to the hospital.” He was shocked when the doctors said he had to undergo emergency surgery “with a hole in his stomach.” At the end of November he had already had hip surgery.

Polster jokes again about “Schnizterl and Cordon Bleu” – and then gets very serious

On January 21st, a Radio Lower Austria presenter visited him and asked about his condition. “I feel better every day. The worst is over. Now I just have to wait until the wounds heal,” said Polster, who was immediately in the mood to joke: “I’m looking forward to my first schnitzel, my first cordon bleu, my first ribs again. I still have to be disciplined for a few weeks now.”

The relaxed and humorous joker, who is also up for any practical joke on Instagram, can’t help but make a joke here too, but he also becomes serious in his conclusion about his recent experiences. “It was very strange. Actually, it was without warning. My wife thought I was having a heart attack. I just thought I’d get a powder or an injection in the hospital. I was shocked to death. Then I was already in the operating room, so of course you feel at your mercy.”

Football legend Polster: Indestructible as a player, now “he’s getting old”

Polster reflects: “You are increasingly aware that you are in the last third of your life and that you don’t have that much time left. The more consciously and intensively you try to live and enjoy yourself. You notice: Now you’re getting old.” The world-class striker was spared any major injuries during his active career. “I was a professional for 20 years and never had a serious injury. You already think of yourself as indestructible. That can’t happen to me. Nothing happened to me even against the toughest and most unfair defenders. “I’m not that indestructible after all,” Polster is also quoted by meine.at.

In the first weeks of 2024, football has already lost two legends. Mario Zagallo of Brazil, the first person ever to win a World Cup as a player and coach, has died. Shortly after him, Franz Beckenbauer also achieved this. (ank with dpa material)
