To Germàn Cano of Fluminense the Golden Ball of South America – Calcio

He is the Argentinian Germàn Cano, 35-year-old striker of Fluminense, winner of the Carioca championship and the Copa Libertadores, the best player in South America for 2023. In fact, he placed first, with a wide margin over the second place (the Colombian Jhon Arias, also from Fluminense) in the referendum among the specialized press (250 voted) announced by the Montevideo newspaper ‘El Pais’ which traditionally assigns this prize which is the South American equivalent of the Ballon d’Or and is reserved for players who perform part of clubs in the Conmebol area.

Cano, the first Fluminense player to win the recognition, scored 40 goals in the 2023 calendar year and was the Libertadores’ top scorer with 13 goals. In the roll of honor of the ‘El Pais’ award he succeeds the former mysterious object of Fiorentina Pedro, protagonist of a great 2022 with the shirt of another Rio team, Flamengo.

In the ranking of the best of 2023, behind Cano and Arias were two Uruguayans, the ‘Pistolero’ Luis Suarez of Gremio (now at Inter Miami) and Nicolas De la Cruz of River Plate.

Fluminense also achieved success in the award for best coach, which went to Fernando Diniz who is also, as is known, the ‘interim’ coach of the Seleçao. In second place is another Brazilian, the former Roma striker Renato Portaluppi, who has just been reconfirmed at the helm of Gremio.
