It was dark in Pumpkin Ridge GC (Oregon, United States) on August 25, 1996. Tiger Woods had just made history, the only human being on earth capable of winning three US Amateurs, also in a row. Earlhis father, strutted among the press drinking champagne, reaffirming his fantasy that the black Mesas had been reincarnated as his son and would be able to change the world.

Immediately afterwards, the young Woods, only 20 years old, entered a room next to Butch Harmonhis coach and Hughes Norton (his first and fleeting agent). There it was Phil Knight, CEO of Nike with a VHS tape that he inserted into a player by instantly pressing play. 58 seconds of dead silence later, only Tiger’s voice was heard: “Damn, can I see him again?”

The revolutionary first Nike spot for Tiger Woods was quite an impact and not only because of its protest content, but because it meant equipping Woods, a still amateur golfer, with Michel Jordan, Charles Barkley, Bo Jackson o Andre Agassi. The difference is that all of these names had their own spots after having achieved historical milestones and achievements and Woods had not yet taken a single shot as a golf professional.

This first contract that Tiger signs with Nike amounts to 40 million dollars for five years. To put the astronomical amount in context, it is worth remembering that in that same year 1996, Greg Norman He had the highest contract in golf, earning about two and a half million dollars a year thanks to his commercial commitments with Reebok.

Since then, the relationship between the winner of 15 majors and the American multinational has been one of the most solid and rewarding in the history of sport.

The second contract, signed in 2001, marked a financial milestone by making Woods the highest-paid athlete of all time, with a five-year, $105 million contract. During this period, Nike diversified its presence in golf, introducing golf balls and clubs under the Woods brand. This contract coincided with one of the most dominant periods of Tiger’s career.

It is estimated that Tiger Woods has been able to earn more than 500 million wearing the clothes and playing the clubs of the American multinational.

Woods communicated the news through his social networks in a brief text: “In the last 27 years I have been fortunate to have an agreement with one of the most iconic brands in the world. The road has been full of great moments and memories, If I had to name them, it would be a lifetime. Phil Knight’s passion and vision led me to Nike and Nike Golf and I want to thank him personally, along with the entire Nike team and the incredible athletes I have had the pleasure of working with. “Throughout this whole journey. People will wonder if this is a new chapter, if there will be a new chapter, I’ll see you in Los Angeles.” In the statement the brand does not reveal that the Californian will wear the Californian in its next commitments.

We will have to wait for the next tournament (which Woods has revealed) to find out more about it. And in the same statement Tiger has confirmed his presence at the Genesis Invitational that will be held from February 15 to 18 at Riviera Country Club, in Los Angeles, a tournament that he won.
