The Supreme Court of the United States will decide whether Donald Trump can run for office

BarcelonaThe Supreme Court of the United States will have the last word on a key element of the country’s electoral race: it will have to decide whether Donald Trump can be a candidate in the presidential elections, which will be held in November this year. On Wednesday, the former Republican president appealed to the country’s highest court the decision taken by the Supreme Court of Colorado to expel him from the Republican primaries in that state for his role in the assault on the Capitol on January 6 of 2021. And this Friday night, the judges agreed to study the case and their decision will be decisive, since it will not only apply to Colorado, but to the entire country.

The Colorado judiciary announced the veto on December 19, in an unprecedented move, and the state of Maine followed suit a week later. In this case, it was the secretary of state, local electoral officer, who also accepted amendment 14 of the Constitution, which prohibits people who have participated in an insurrection, such as the one from yesterday, from aspiring to the presidency three years This is the first time in US history that this legal tool has been used to disqualify a presidential candidate from an election. The Supreme Court will make the decision during the month of February, before Colorado and Maine celebrate the Republican primaries, on March 5, the day known as Super Tuesday.

Additionally, other states have filed lawsuits to try to prevent the Republican mogul from running for re-election. Justices in Minnesota and Michigan have ruled it out, while in other states, such as Oregon, the decision is still pending.

The nation’s highest court has a conservative majority (6-3), and three of the justices were appointed by Trump when he was president. After accepting the request of the former Republican president, they now have the most important decision on their political future, although not the only one. Supreme Court justices must also decide whether the former president is guilty or innocent of charges of attempting to obstruct the transfer of power on January 6, 2021, one of four pending criminal trials against the former president, along with those of Florida (for the classified papers), New York (for the Stormy Daniels case) and Georgia (for the alleged attempt to alter the result of the elections in that state).
