The Rise and Fall of Paris Brunner: From U17 Prodigy to Disciplinary Woes

What kind of birthday present would that be? In 35 days, on February 15th, Paris Brunner could sign his first professional contract.

For Brunner, who was born near Dortmund, this would be a confirmation of his sporting abilities – if it weren’t for the scenes off the pitch, as was the case recently in the training camp…

Paris Brunner between genius and madness

U17 hopefuls, suspension, pardon, World Cup title, training camp with the professionals, renewed sanction. What reads like a script from a football novel sums up Paris Brunner’s past three months. Three months in which the 17-year-old constantly alternated between genius and madness.

He has shown for years that Brunner has a great talent for football. In the U19 Bundesliga this season he scored ten goals in nine games for the BVB youth team, meaning he scored every 67 minutes. He also impressed at the U17 World Cup shortly before Christmas.

He almost single-handedly shot the U17 team into the final with five goals and was then able to celebrate the title. His pace and actions earned him the title of “best player of the tournament” – just like he did at the U17 European Championship last summer.

Winning the Fritz Walter Gold Medal, the award for the best youth player in his year, was only logical.

BVB young star Brunner doesn’t learn from mistakes

At BVB they wanted to slowly introduce him to the professionals and give him time. With the aim that at some point he can become a top performer on the team or at least be sold for a high price.

Brunner, who is still being advised by his father, is in the process of throwing away his promising future himself. Because of a disciplinary offense, Brunner was suspended from the club in October and had to clear out his locker.

For a long time it was unclear whether he would even be allowed to continue at BVB. After many detailed discussions, including between the club and family, he was pardoned and played an outstanding World Cup. At BVB they were proud of their wonder boy.

Conversations with family are not fruitful – will BVB take action?

Almost three months later, the next negative incident occurred: At Dortmund’s training camp in Marbella, he returned to the hotel a few minutes late together with youth player Cole Campbell. Brunner once again did not adhere to club guidelines.

The fact that the incident alone was comparatively insignificant does not change the fact that young player Brunner makes more headlines than any other BVB professional. And not in a positive way.

The result: Like Campbell, he was the only one not to play in both the last team training session in Marbella and the friendly match against Standard Liège. Coincidence? BVB coach Terzic spoke of “load control” after the game.

Conversations on Wednesday at the training center in Brackel with his family and also the round at the training camp with his mother and Otto Addo, who traveled to Marbella primarily as a contact person for the young players, indicate something different.

Borussia Dortmund and, above all, BVB youth director Lars Ricken actually had a “clear plan” with Brunner that “goes beyond a funding agreement”. At least that was the idea before the training camp in Marbella.

It is quite possible that those responsible at Borussia Dortmund are now thinking about how long they want to sit idle and watch the Paris Brunner case. The birthday present “professional contract” is wobbling!
